Advocate Independence

Each citizen advocacy relationship is freely given. Each Citizen Advocate is independent of the Citizen Advocacy office, of human services, and even of their advocacy partner’s family. A Citizen Advocate’s loyalty is to an individual person. This allows the Citizen Advocate to speak out and act with both freedom and clarity.

Clarity of Staff Function

Citizen Advocacy coordinators do not act as advocates and the program does not engage in other forms of advocacy. Citizen Advocacy coordinators focus exclusively on initiating and supporting matches and the operational needs of the Citizen Advocacy office.

Diversity of Relationships

The range of citizen advocate roles and the nature of advocacy relationships are, by their nature, quite diverse. Citizen Advocates choose, together with their partner, the direction and nature of their relationship. Citizen Advocacy coordinators orient and support Citizen Advocates in these choices.

Positive Imagery

The Citizen Advocacy office strives to serve as model for both positive interpretations and favorable impressions of people with disabilities.

Program Independence

The Citizen Advocacy office maintains its independence from other human service organizations so as to help ensure that citizen advocates will not have conflicts of interests.
