Citizen Advocacy of Chester County, Phoenixville Regional Chamber of Commerce’s “Non-Profit of the Year”, was founded in 1980 to initiate and support a variety of intentional relationships that provide advocacy for opportunity, protection from harm, sponsorship into community life, friendship, and justice for isolated people living with a disability. We connect and empower individuals through lifelong, intentional relationships that promote community, connection, and protection.

In our region, the difference between hope and despair is often just one person who cares. For over 44 years, Citizen Advocacy of Chester County has proven this truth—relationship by relationship, person by person.

“Connections you make in life are more important than material possessions,” James says. “It means a lot to me when Jim remembers trivial details about my life… then I know he cares about me as much as I care about him.”

Since 1980, we have facilitated hundreds of these one-to-one advocacy matches, pairing individuals with disabilities—often isolated or marginalized due to society’s response to disability—with dedicated community advocates. Today, we support 69 ongoing relationships, some lasting more than 20 years. These connections aren’t just friendships; they are lifelines that can mean the difference between eviction or shelter, abuse or protection, neglect or proper care.

Each match transforms lives and ripples outward—strengthening families, neighborhoods, and entire communities. This relationship-based approach to transformation earned us the 2025 Nonprofit of the Year award from the Phoenixville Regional Chamber of Commerce.
